Three festival sites, three different reasons to go
The Sapporo Snow Festival turns three different parts of the city into distinct winter experiences: monumental works along Odori Park, illuminated ice in Susukino and family snow activities at Tsudome.
The organizer has confirmed all three sites for February 4–11, 2027 and published the Odori concept, but detailed sculptures, shows and operating arrangements will arrive later. Travelers can responsibly book the city now without pretending the final program exists.
Our takeUse Odori as the spine, add Susukino after dark and treat Tsudome as a separate half-day. The event is free; winter pacing is the real constraint.
Is it worth the journey?
- Large snow works reveal engineering and collective craft as much as spectacle.
- Odori by day and Susukino after dark create genuinely different visual experiences.
- Sapporo’s winter transport and indoor network make a major snow event practical for ordinary visitors.
Best for
- Travelers who enjoy public art, photography and cold-weather city trips
- Families able to separate Tsudome play from the busier central sites
Think twice if
- Ice, prolonged cold or slippery walking create a serious personal risk
- You need the final accessible routes or activity requirements before committing
The moments worth planning around
First sight of a large Odori work
Scale becomes clear only when a snow facade fills an entire city block and visitors can see the construction detail.
Ice after dark in Susukino
Illumination changes transparent ice into a separate night experience rather than an extension of the daytime route.
Snow play at Tsudome
The family-oriented site adds physical winter activity, subject to the 2027 safety rules and operating schedule still to come.
Planning your visit
Reserve
Outdoor viewing needs no reservation. Book cancellable lodging and transport early, but wait for the official 2027 activity pages before paying for any timed or capacity-controlled element.
Official reservation guideArrive
Use New Chitose Airport rail to Sapporo when operating normally, then subway and underground passages. Keep extra time for snowfall and treat Tsudome as a separate transit journey.
Official transport guideBudget
Public sites are free, while winter rooms, meals and regional travel drive cost. Spend first on a central base, waterproof footwear and flexible transport rather than a speculative event package.
Handle the crowds
Follow the official one-way viewing flow when posted, pause only in wider spaces and avoid stepping backward into moving traffic for photographs. Weekday mornings reduce pressure.
Bring the family
Use warm indoor breaks, waterproof layers and a shorter route. Confirm Tsudome age, height and weather rules once the 2027 activity list is released.
Official family guidanceAccessibility
The central city has elevators and underground links, but packed snow, temporary ramps and Tsudome operations vary. The event-specific 2027 accessible map remains pending.

Where to stay
Central Sapporo offers the best resilience: underground passages, rail and subway connections, and a short route to Odori when weather slows surface travel.
Sapporo Station
Best for: Airport rail, indoor links and resilient winter arrival
Tradeoff: A short subway ride or walk from Odori
Odori
Best for: Direct access to the principal sculpture corridor
Tradeoff: High demand and dense evening foot traffic
Susukino
Best for: Nightlife and the ice-sculpture site
Tradeoff: Louder and farther from airport rail
Central Sapporo / Clock Tower
Sapporo Grand Hotel
A long-established central hotel with substantial review evidence, an underground connection useful in snow and a location between Sapporo Station and the Odori festival site.
Know before booking: The large property has several room categories and older rooms may feel dated. Confirm the building and room type rather than assuming every rate reflects the renovated product.
Sapporo Station
JR Tower Hotel Nikko Sapporo
A particularly resilient winter-arrival choice above Sapporo Station, backed by large review bases and direct access to rail, subway, shopping and indoor circulation before the short trip to Odori.
Know before booking: It carries a premium and is not inside the snow-sculpture grounds. Odori still requires a walk or subway ride, and high-floor views should never be treated as festival views.
Hotel ratings move over time. We check at least two independent sources and include a drawback, but you should still read recent reviews before paying.
Questions first-time visitors ask
Is the Sapporo Snow Festival free?
General viewing at the three main sites is free. Food, transport and some individual activities can cost extra.
Can I walk all three sites?
No sensible plan treats Tsudome as a continuation of the central walk. Use transit and give it a separate block.
Are the 2027 sculptures announced?
Not yet in full. The committee confirms the dates, three sites and Odori concept; detailed works and programs will follow.
